"Northward bound – at the far edge of the world"

Summer exhibition at the North Cape museum 14 June – end of November 2010.
The museum presents 23 maps of the northern regions, dating from 15th to the 17th century. These are part of one of the biggest map
collections of this region.
The core of the exhibition comprises maps of the northern regions, Norway and Scandinavia from 1482 and up to the beginning of the 17th century. They illustrate how voyages of discovery and the spiritual and cultural upheaval of the Renaissance and humanism changed the view of the world.
The maps are one of the most complete collections of maps of the Northern region in the world. In addition to this are the 23 editions of the 16th century theologian and historian Olaus Magnus’ (1490 – 1557) illustrated book about the history of the Nordic people.
The exhibition also offers digital maps and films, and even more exciting material from the North Cape Museum. The maps are privately owned by three partners with a special interest in culture and finance in the northern regions. The attraction to and consequent interest in the north was historically, as today, based on resources, territory, new knowledge, political circumstances, and financial gains and hand in hand with this, a fascination with culture.
This is both a family exhibition and an exhibition of interest to a range of disciplines. The exhibition will be open for a limited period of time, and has been produced in collaboration with the National Library in Oslo and Erling Walsøe.
