Wildlife, hunting and trapping
The Nordkyn peninsula is home to a wide variety of wildlife, and quite a few species has been brought to the museum over the years.
In earlier times, a good skin from fox or otter was highly priced, and could mean a significant contribution to a fisherman’s economy.
Cormoran, seals and other animals that most people do not eat today, brought variety to a diet dominated by fish.
Predators were considered a pest, and were sought extinct by any means. These efforts were successful to such a degree that many of these species are today protected by law. Skills necessary for successful trapping and hunting of fur-bearing animals are almost forgotten.
